The Fish Shed, Brancaster Staithe, Norfolk
Brancaster Staithe, King's Lynn, Norfolk, PE31 8BY
Look for the big orange crab on the barrow outside The Fish Shed, the wet fish shop opposite the White Horse at Brancaster Staithe, on the Norfolk Coast between Hunstanton and Wells-next-the-Sea. Inside, the counter is a bed of ice with whatever's in: crab and lobster, oysters, and mussels from Brancaster, which is about as local as shellfish gets on this coast. The smoked fish comes in from Lowestoft and from just across the road. Alongside the fish there's local meat and game, seasonal fruit and veg, and things they make themselves. It's family run and open every day, ten till four in winter and ten till five in summer. If you're staying in Brancaster Staithe for the week, this is the shop to know about. Especially if you're planning to cook fish. I'd go for a dressed crab, take it home and keep everything else simple.

What do you sell?
Wet fish and shellfish first. The counter is a bed of ice stocked with what's in season, typically crab, lobster, oysters and mussels, with Brancaster mussels when they're running. Smoked fish, bought in from Lowestoft and from across the road in Brancaster Staithe. Local meat and game. Seasonal fruit and veg. Homemade products. The range follows the season and the weather, so the counter in January looks different from the counter in August, and the best way to find out what's in is to go and look.
Which local producers do you stock?
The shellfish is as local as it gets. The mussels come from Brancaster, where the mussel and oyster beds lie just off the staithe, a short walk from the shop. The smoked fish comes from two places: Lowestoft, further round the coast in Suffolk, and from across the road in Brancaster Staithe itself. The fruit and veg are seasonal, and the meat and game are local. The shop doesn't publish a list of named suppliers, so if you want to know which boat or farm something came from, ask at the counter. It's a small, family-run shop and that's the kind of question it's set up to answer.
