In one of the polytunnels at Wigford Cross, around 200 chilli varieties are fruiting at once by late summer - every shape, colour and heat the plant is capable of. South Devon Chilli Farm have been growing them in this corner of the South Hams since 2001. The chillies that go into everything sold in the farm shop, the sauces, preserves, chocolates and dried lines, were grown in those tunnels and processed on the farm. No extracts. No artificial preservatives. The original founders sold up in 2022 to Amrit and Jenny Madhoo. Amrit grew up in Trinidad, where chilli is a kitchen staple and the new Caribbean Collection sits alongside the older range. The farm's own ripe Jalapenos are smoked over apple wood from the orchard on site and come out as Chipotle. The same orchard's apples go into the Hot Apple Chilli Jelly. Pest control is biological (other insects, not spray). The production kitchen is SALSA-certified, the show tunnel runs roughly late May to November, and the RHS Gold awards have stacked up over recent years. Worth the drive down from the A38.

Food & Drink Devon Awards 2024/25: highest accolade for the Hot Habanero Salsa, with further recognition for the Extreme Chilli Chocolate. Taste of the West 2024 Gold for the Mint Chilli Drinking Chocolate, with a further award for the White Chilli Chocolate. Multiple Great Taste stars across the range over the years. Yes. The farm shop at Wigford Cross is open year-round - check the website for current opening days. The show tunnel of around 200 chilli plant varieties is free to visit, roughly late May to November. Plant sales run from late March. Online ordering with UK-wide delivery is also available.
