Sandridge Barton (home of Sharpham Wine) Stoke Gabriel
Stoke Gabriel, Totnes, Devon
Sandridge Barton, home of Sharpham Wine, sits in a south-facing bowl above the east bank of the River Dart, three miles downriver from Totnes. The roots reach back further than the address suggests: in 1981, Maurice and Ruth Ash trialled thirteen grape varieties on the slopes opposite, on what was then the Sharpham Estate. Madeleine Angevine, little-grown in England at the time, suited this stretch of Devon best, and forty years on it remains in the range. The current vineyard spans around 38 acres, planted at Sandridge Barton from 2008 onwards across three blocks. The geology is unusual: sandy loam topsoil over volcanic tuff (Schalstein, locally), with an eight-acre block added in 2021 on a raised limestone bed that was once a shallow tropical reef. That's where the Burgundian and Champagne clones of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier go in. Duncan Schwab joined the team in 1992 and is now head winemaker and CEO. No pesticides, no herbicides, no tilling beneath the vines. The Blanc de Noirs 2020 took a Master Medal at the Global Sparkling Masters 2023; the East Field Pinot Noir 2022 took gold at WineGB 2024. The visitor centre is open most days through the year for tastings, tours and a seasonal vineyard safari, with weekends only in early February. Sharpham cheeses, still made next door by Sharpham Partnership, are sold from the farm shop alongside the wine.
