Little Modbury Farm, Modbury, Devon
Modbury, South Hams, Devon
This shepherd's hut stands among apple, pear and plum trees, with the family's sheep, cows and sheepdogs in the next field. Little Modbury Farm sits on the northern edge of the South Devon AONB, twenty minutes' drive from Ivybridge and the southern flank of Dartmoor. The same family has worked this ground for decades. One hut, set in an orchard, is what they let to guests. The setting is idyllic. Daffodils come early, blossom follows in spring, blackberries in late summer, and old wildflowers and hazel saplings fill the corners between. A footpath close to the hut leads down into Modbury - a working town with a supermarket, a deli, a proper butcher and a handful of cafés. The South West Coast Path is a few miles away on foot, the surf beaches at Bantham, Bigbury and Mothecombe are twenty minutes by car. This is the kind of stay where the appeal isn't only the accommodation but everything around it: a working family farm doing its work, a single hut tucked into one corner of an orchard and the chance to walk out of the door into proper countryside without the engine of a car needing to start.

What do you produce?
Sheep and cows graze the surrounding fields, sheepdogs work them between pastures, and chickens range across the yard. The orchard around the hut is planted with apple, pear and plum trees; hazel saplings, old wildflowers, blossoms and blackberry brambles fill the spaces between. The same family has worked this holding for decades - a small mixed farm of livestock and orchard, with the rhythms of the year visible from the door. Daffodils come in spring, blackberries in late summer. Guests staying in the hut see the working day from the doorstep: the dogs going out at first light, the sheep moved in the late afternoon.
Tell us about your rental accomodation
One hut, for two. The kitchen and the bathroom sit in separate, modern facilities beside the hut, both fitted out properly with everything a stay actually needs. The hut itself is quiet and tucked into the corner of an orchard, with the working farm in view from the door. Reception is unmanned after nine, so late arrivals are asked to call ahead. The setup is built for couples or solo walkers wanting a base in the South Hams, not for groups: one hut, no others sharing the field. Outside, there is space to sit out when the weather allows.
How many people can you accommodate?
Two guests. One bed. The hut is a single-occupancy unit, built for a couple, two friends, or a solo walker. There are no extra beds, sofa beds or fold-outs available, and the maximum is firm at two. This is one hut on the farm, not a small site of several. Anyone travelling with children should check with the owners directly about whether the setup will work for their party.
