Langage Farm, Smithaleigh, Devon

Smithaleigh, Plymouth, Devon

The same family has been making cream on the same farm, from herds that graze the same fields for forty-five years and they're still working out how to do it better. Langage Farm, just outside Plymouth in Devon, made themselves Britain's first carbon-neutral dairy in 2010 by closing a loop. Food waste from their dairy production feeds an anaerobic digester; the digester powers the farm; the digestate left behind fertilises the pastures that feed the Jersey and Guernsey herd that produces the milk in the first place. The waste from making clotted cream powers the farm that produces the next batch. The Harveys bought the farm in 1952. The dairy began in 1980, when Len and Buff Harvey spent £7 on a box of cartons, borrowed a separator, and started selling cream skimmed from the family's Jersey and Guernsey milk to a nearby shop. Their son James took it on and his son Ben is now in the business. Three generations, one farm. The herd numbers around 250, mostly outside in the Devon summer for around twenty-two hours a day, in only for milking. The farmstead has been worked for over 900 years - Langage is listed in the Domesday Book among the manors of Plympton. Their Devonshire clotted cream took Champion Dairy Product at the Taste of the West Awards in 2024.
