Chet Valley Vineyard, Bergh Apton, Norfolk

Bergh Apton, Norwich, Norfolk

John Hemmant planted the first vines at Chet Valley Vineyard in Bergh Apton, South Norfolk, in 2010. Nine miles south of Norwich, the vineyard grows its own grapes and makes still and sparkling wines in its own winery. The wines take their names from birds that visit the vineyard. Skylark, for one. In July 2026 the vineyard changed hands. Crispin Binder, who farmed 400 acres at Maldon for 30 years, bought it, and John has stayed on as winemaking consultant. John is still involved in making the wine, now as a consultant. Visitors have come for tours and tastings from April to October, and to stay in the Vine House, a holiday cottage looking over the vines. In 2023 the House of Hemmant Blanc de Blancs 2021 won a bronze at the WineGB awards. A new owner with thirty years of farming behind him, and the man who planted the vines still advising on the wine. That's a handover worth watching.
