Aune Valley Meat, Loddiswell & Modbury, Devon
Loddiswell & Modbury, South Hams, Devon
Aune Valley Meat is run by the Winzer family, three generations in. Much of the meat counter is sourced from the family farm and local farms. The beef and lamb coming from Richard John Winzer's farm at Higher Coarsewell, five miles up the road near Ugborough. Pork is reared near Kingsbridge. Poultry stays within Devon. The shop sits at Rake Farm between Loddiswell and Kingsbridge, with a second branch on Modbury's main street. Alongside the meat counter, the deli holds Sharpham cheese from up the Dart valley, vegetables from South Milton ten minutes south, free-range eggs, and pies and pasties baked on site at the Valley View kitchen. The beef is mostly Angus heifers, hung fourteen days, and has carried Taste of the West awards more than once. What you will notice first is the absence of a middleman. Most counters this size are stocked from wholesale lists; this one is stocked from a list of neighbours. Richard Winzer can be found behind the counter as often as he is on the farm and the family takes their own animals to the abattoir in their own transport to keep the stress on the day to a minimum. Over forty years in, this is the butchery the South Hams turns up at on Saturdays and queues outside, on the narrow Modbury pavement, when it has to.
